Community Development

Increasing the vitality of our communities and improving quality of life

Community development is the cornerstone of our corporate citizenship. It is a privilege to conduct business in our communities, and we are committed to being a good neighbor wherever we operate. By engaging with community stakeholders, nearby nonprofits, and local officials, Motiva effectively manages the social impacts of our activities while working to address local and regional challenges.

We strive to create lasting relationships with the communities we serve, contributing to their growth and prosperity. Our efforts in community development encompass a wide range of activities, from local outreach programs to larger-scale initiatives that aim to uplift and empower entire neighborhoods and regions.

Small Business and Local Community Support

We are committed to building the capacity and capability of local people and businesses to support long-term economic development. In partnership with Lamar State College Port Arthur and the Small Business Development Center, we provide quarterly coaching workshops for small business owners in Southeast Texas. We further support the economic vitality of the Golden Triangle region of Texas through ongoing partnerships with nine community economic development organizations.

Downtown Port Arthur

Motiva is proud to be one of many partners in the City of Port Arthur’s downtown renaissance through our preservation of the historic Adams building. Working closely with the Texas Historical Commission and the leadership of Port Arthur, Motiva is maintaining the iconic character of the building façade, while modernizing the interiors for the needs of our workforce – a workforce that has been part of the fabric of this city for 120-plus years.

Once renovated, the Adams building will provide much needed office space for Motiva employees and contractors who are not directly involved in site-specific maintenance or operations.

Museum of the Gulf Coast

In 2023, Motiva announced a five-year pledge of $1 million to the Museum of the Gulf Coast’s expansion project. In recognition of our 120 years in the Port Arthur community, the pledge will support a new museum wing focused on the science and technology of polymers and composites.

The Museum of the Gulf Coast, located only two blocks from Motiva’s future downtown campus, has been a fixture of the local community for nearly 30 years, attracting 14,000 visitors annually. The new expansion will serve as a historical account of refining in Port Arthur and display the profound global impact that the city has played, and will continue to play, in the energy industry.

Motiva Volunteer Council

The Motiva Volunteer Council is made up of employees across our company who are passionate about having fun while making a difference. Ensuring we effectively serve areas of the community where it is needed most, this dedicated group of employees coordinates and leads dozens of volunteer activities annually in the Port Arthur and Houston areas, ensuring we make meaningful impacts in our local communities.

Matching Gifts Program

Outside of volunteer efforts, Motiva employees support a diverse range of nonprofits through charitable contributions. Motiva’s Matching Gifts Program, a donation-based company match program, allows employees to double the difference of their donations to nonprofits falling within our three corporate areas of support – community development; education and training; and health, safety, and environmental stewardship.
